Man missing after caught in rip

Update, 5.30pm: A man has died and another is missing after being caught in treacherous surf near Margaret River this afternoon.

The 29-year-old man was pronounced dead after being plucked from the water off Redgate Beach at about 1.30pm.

Rescuers have spent more than four hours searching for a 23-year-old man who is still missing in the water.

A fixed wing aircraft, two helicopters, three jet skis, two volunteer marine rescue vessels and the State Emergency Service have been involved in this afternoon's search.

A police spokesman said communications in the area were limited but conditions had been described as treacherous.

A Surf Life Saving WA spokesman said there was a small swell but strong rips at the beach.

The search is due to be scaled with the South West lifesaving rescue helicopter leaving the search area at 6pm.

The search is expected to continue at 6am tomorrow.

Redgate beach is a popular local surf spot south of Margaret River. The beach is not patrolled by surf lifesavers.
