The huge popularity of an elaborate Christmas lights display has forced its downfall after large crowds flocked to a quiet suburban street, sparking safety and traffic management fears.
Video footage of the display on YouTube– programmed to infectious South Korean hit Gangnam Style – attracted almost half a million hits in its two weeks online and was mentioned by US talk show host Ellen DeGeneres on her program in recent days.
Kym Illman’s creation on his Churchlands home, which involved 41,000 light bulbs, 2000 light channels, 2km of cable, 90 hours programming and 200 hours to set it up, is no longer on display after unprecedented numbers rushed to see the spectacular in its first three nights.
“Crowd numbers last night were up nearly ten times on early nights from previous years and experience shows that those numbers build exponentially as we get closer to Christmas,” Mr Illman said.
“The prospect of such large numbers in a very small street over a number of weeks is simply unmanageable. There is also a very real safety risk, in particular to young children.
“Next year we will be looking to find a commercial premise to light up, one that has plenty of parking and room for spectators to view the show safely.”
