A 24-year-old woman is in a critical condition after being hit by a taxi in Mt Lawley early this morning.

Bayswater police are calling for witnesses to the incident, which occurred on Beaufort Street about 1.30am.

It is believed the woman walked into the northbound lanes of Beaufort Street and was possibly trying to flag down a taxi travelling in the opposite southbound lane when she was struck.

The woman was taken to Royal Perth Hospital by ambulance with critical injuries.

The driver of the taxi and two passengers who stopped at the scene have assisted police with the investigation and the taxi has been seized for examination.
