Police are looking for a man who assaulted and threatened a woman with a handgun during an attempted armed robbery in Maylands earlier this month.

A police spokesman said the 27-year-old Maylands woman was approached by a man as she walked home along Guilford Road, near the Caledonian Avenue intersection, about 11pm on October 3.

As she passed a nearby Coles supermarket, the man demanded she hand over money.

When the victim said she did not have any money the man punched her in the face and took out a silver handgun.

Shortly afterwards the man was startled by a passing motorist and ran away along Caledonian Avenue.
He escaped empty handed.

The man is described as being of Asian appearance, about 160cm tall and aged between 20 and 25 with a medium build and short black hair.

He was clean shaven and wearing a light-coloured T-shirt and light-coloured jeans.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
