Vince Garreffa threw his arms in the air and shouted "papa" when Antonio Carluccio rounded the corner at Government House ballroom.
It was a typical Italian greeting from WA's favourite butcher, the prince of flesh, to the godfather of Italian cuisine.
Carluccio, a legendary chef and the man who launched Jamie Oliver's career, visited Perth for the first time yesterday to support Mr Garreffa's charity Mondo Community Warriors.
The charismatic 75-year-old said when it came to food, his motto was don't be too fussy - one of the things Carluccio passed on to celebrity chef Oliver when he employed him at his London restaurant. "He is very good, very clever," Carluccio said. "But . . . I believe that only an Italian can really know the secrets of Italian food."
Carluccio transformed Government House ballroom into a little piece of Italy during his whirlwind tour of Perth, seducing food lovers at two events with flavours of his native land and tales from his past.
All proceeds from the sold-out events went to Mondo Community Warriors, an organisation that funds Lifeline and 30 other local charities.
Mr Garreffa said the cooking legend jumped at the opportunity to help raise funds for the organisation and refused any money for expenses.
