One man is in custody and another is on the run after a shot was fired from a police weapon early this morning as an officer struggled with a man on the side of the street in Dianella.

No-one was injured by the shot but one of two police officers involved in the incident suffered a hand injury and was treated in hospital.

The incident happened around 3am after two police officers, a detective sergeant and a detective first class constable, responded to reports of an abandoned vehicle in Waverley Street.

Inspector Bill Munnee said that when police arrived they found a man sitting inside the car but that a second man who was outside the car attacked the officers.

One of the officers fired his taser but it did not work.

The gun was fired as one of the officers and the second man continued to struggle.

A 26-year-old man is in custody but is yet to be charged.

Police are looking for another man.

Officers from the internal affairs section are investigating the incident.
