An Applecross Senior High School student who says she wants to be "a model with brains" has won Perth Fashion Festival's Chic Model Search 2012.

Kimberley Wynhorst, 15, beat 20 other hopefuls in PFF's cube-style tent this afternoon in front of a capacity crowd that included singer and one-time X-Factor finalist Johnny Ruffo.

The annual competition - although this is the first year PFF has teamed up with modelling agency Chic - is credited with having "discovered" supermodels Gemma Ward and Nicole Trunfio.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event after she was announced as the winner, Kimberley said she was "really excited".

She said she hoped to pursue a career in the industry but also wanted to continue her studies, which would include turning up for her Year 10 exams on Monday morning.

Ruffo was briefly called up onto the stage, where he said he was happy to be back in Perth and was looking forward to the release of his next single in two to three weeks.
