Freshness secret to top ice-cream

Ice-cream does not come much fresher than at Millers Ice Cream.

Third-generation dairy farmer Paul Miller, whose grandfather bought the family's Cowaramup farm in 1932, says their ice-cream is literally "from the cow to the cone".

It is ready to eat within three hours of the cows being milked at their on-site dairy.

When dairy prices crashed a few years ago, Mr Miller and wife Trish decided that making ice-cream was the way to keep the farm afloat.

The couple opened a cafe at their Cowaramup farm late in 2010 and in November they will set up shop at a new family amusement park on Caves Road near Dunsborough.

"When dairy prices crashed, the low returns meant we had to diversify to remain sustainable," Mr Miller said. "I have only met two people in the last three years who don't like ice-cream.

"There are only a few places around here that cater for children and, when the sun's out, the locals come out here to get a treat for the kids."

Millers has six ice-cream flavours in competition at the Perth Royal Show.
