Channel 9 newsreader Louise Momber has lost her renowned father Peter to cancer just two months after her mother Liz lost her battle with the disease.
She was too upset yesterday to speak about the impact her parents had on her life and was being cared for by her Melbourne-based journalist husband Rob Scott, whom she married in May. Both parents were at the wedding.
Peter Momber died, aged 67, on Tuesday. Tributes for the popular lawyer poured in after the famously private family made their loss public.
A former senior partner at Jackson McDonald, Mr Momber started his law firm in 1998 and spent many years representing the WA Police Union and West Coast Eagles.
He often appeared in court for Eagles players, including confessed drug addict Ben Cousins.
Former WA Police Union president Mike Dean said Mr Momber was heavily involved in the legalities for six police pay negotiations.
Mr Dean said he was close to Mr Momber, whom he called a "thorough gentleman" who rarely elaborated on his health battles.
"If anyone could settle a delicate issue in an amicable manner and walk out with the respect of all the parties involved, it was Peter," Mr Dean said.
Long-time friend Dean Alston, a cartoonist at _The West Australian _, said Mr Momber was a wonderful bloke who was perhaps the most quick-witted man he had met.
"He was positive, funny and irreverent," Alston said. "A wonderfully loyal friend to our family. He leaves a huge space unfilled."
When writing about her father in 2009, Momber said he would do anything for her and sister Antonia. He had even been their netball coach despite knowing little about the rules.
"He'd turn up for training during the week in his best 'lawyer suit' and leather shoes and join us in our drills, tie flapping in the breeze," she said.
"My teammates got used to being told to 'man up' during a tense game or being sent to play 'full-back' or 'half-forward'."
Momber said she found it tough to get any information from her father when reporting on Cousins. "I think Dad enjoyed having one over me," she said.
Mr Momber's funeral is today.
