A mother who was ambushed by one of WA's most notorious paedophiles as she was looking after her sick baby has described the ordeal as terrifying and called for her attacker to be jailed indefinitely.

Shannon, who did not want her surname published, was still in shock last night as she told of her frightening encounter with convicted child sex offender Bradley Pen Dragon on Tuesday night.

She was placing her 11-month-old daughter in the back of the family car about 8pm after a visit to Mercy Hospital in Mt Lawley when a man leapt through a rear door brandishing a knife.

"I thought he was just some rough-street, wino-type character," she said.

"I thought if I scream as loud as I can he will run away and I just started screaming (but) he didn't move.

"I screamed 'I've got a sick baby', thinking maybe he wants to steal my car and he won't want to steal it with a baby in it.

"He then leapt across over the baby to get a knife around in front of me."

The 38-year said her adrenaline took over as she grabbed the blade of the kitchen knife and wrestled with Pen Dragon.

"I just grabbed the blade … as tightly as I could and I went yank, yank, yank and just tried to rip this blade from him," she said.

"I yanked the blade out of his hand - I don't know how long that took but I yanked it out of his hand - and then I just flung it, I threw the blade out of the car door as far as I could throw it. He just ran."

A couple of people then came to her aid.

Shannon said she was relieved nothing worse had happened and angry that Pen Dragon had been in a position to reoffend.

The 52-year-old has been jailed repeatedly in Australia and overseas for child sex offences and was under police investigation only last month over allegations he had been accessing child pornography.

He was also identified in footage appearing to show him trying to stab another man who had confronted him in an internet cafe.

Shannon said she had never heard of Pen Dragon before yesterday and was appalled such a known dangerous criminal could have been walking the streets.

"What frightens me is that even if it is 50 years before this guy is let out, I don't ever want to know that this guy is out there again," she said.

Pen Dragon appeared briefly in Perth Magistrate's Court yesterday charged with armed assault with intent to rob and aggravated unlawful wounding.

His lawyer did not apply for bail and he was remanded in custody to reappear in court next month.
