An Australian woman arrested in Malaysia with a Nigerian man may face the death penalty, after a kilogram of suspected methamphetamine was allegedly found in their car.

Malaysian police yesterday confirmed the woman and man had been arrested on July 17 and were being held as investigations continue.

The woman, believed to be 34 and from Melbourne, will appear in the Jalan Duta Magistrate's Court in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, on Tuesday.

Police said they had not yet decided whether to charge the pair under Section 39B of Malaysia’s Dangerous Drugs Act, which carries the mandatory death penalty for possession of 50g or more of methamphetamine.

It is understood the pair was in a stationary car in a district of Kuala Lumpur when they were approached by police and asked to get out.

A search of the car allegedly turned up about one kilogram of suspected methamphetamine.

The woman was believed to have been in the driver’s seat. Neither she nor the Nigerian man have been named, as they are yet to be charged.

The arrests have been reported by the Malaysian press.

Another Australian is already facing the death penalty in Malaysia for drug trafficking.

Perth man Dominic Jude Christopher Bird, 32, was arrested by undercover officers on March 1 at a Kuala Lumpur coffee shop, where police allege he was trying to sell them 167g of methamphetamine.

He has been charged with one count of drug trafficking and one count of drug use in relation to an alleged positive urine test taken after his arrest.

Bird has pleaded not guilty to both charges and is likely to have a trial set in November when his hearing date is fixed on August 9.

Bird will also appear in the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Friday in relation to an application by his lawyers.

They are seeking a guaranteed two hours access to their client each week, after being denied regular access since his arrest.

Malaysia has executed three Australians for drug offences.

Kevin Barlow and Brian Chambers were hanged in July 1986, followed by Michael McAuliffe in June 1993.
