A Perth taxi driver has been charged with sexually assaulting a female passenger at the weekend.

Sex Assault Squad officers charged the 28-year old Westminster man with two counts of indecent assault and one count of sexual penetration without consent.

Police allege the man collected a 34-year-old woman from Scarborough Beach Road in Mt Hawthorn about 10.30pm on Saturday.

During the journey the woman fell asleep and woke up to find the taxi driver sexually assaulting her.

The man will appear in the Perth Magistrates Court today.

Police have warned taxi patrons to always be aware surroundings.

"Check the ID picture of the taxi driver matches the actual driver. The taxi driver’s ID is normally on the dashboard or the windscreen visor. If it doesn’t match leave the taxi," police say.

Other police safety tips include:

  • Jot down the taxi’s plate number;
  • Book your taxi through a taxi company'
  • On Friday and Saturday nights use the secure taxi ranks in Northbridge or Fremantle;
  • If travelling alone, sit in the back seat of the taxi;
  • If you are going to be travelling alone, limit your alcohol intake;
  • If you are intoxicated, make sure someone else accompanies you in the taxi. By law a taxi driver is not required to carry intoxicated passengers.
  • If you think the driver does not match the ID card displayed call 9218 3635.
