WA's easygoing meat-loving cook Sam Davis was shocked by his axing from the MasterChef kitchen.

When AAA met Davis yesterday at one of his favourite foodie spots, the West End Deli in West Perth, he spoke of his disappointment in having to leave the competition and even joked about feeling "cranky" in the days leading up to last night's elimination episode.

"I would have loved to have pushed on heaps further, I sort of felt that I had what it took to do it but it wasn't to be," he said.

Having failed to impress in Sunday night's "Dude Food" challenge, the 34-year-old banker last night found himself competing in his first pressure test against favourite Amina Elshafei and serial elimination cook Andrew Strickland.

Having felt confident that his version of chef Christine Manfield's smoked river trout would fare well, Davis said he was surprised judges thought his dish was the worst of the three.

"I couldn't have put up a dish that was more aesthetically close to the dish that Christine Manfield put up (and) flavour-wise I think I did a good job," he said.

However, he also admitted that his culinary approach - which he described as "classical French" - and the fact he wasn't a judges' favourite may have been his undoing.

"George (Calombaris) didn't want me in from the start," he said. "But that's all right, you know they have some people they're more interested in progressing and I just gave them the wrong end of that."

Since returning to WA, Davis said he's had nothing but positive feedback from local MasterChef fans.

"The producers warned us that sometimes people aren't so great but everyone has been fantastic," he said.

Davis is now looking forward to a well-deserved break overseas with his girlfriend of 18 months, *Gemma Beadsworth *.

Beadsworth, who is an Australian water polo player, is set to compete in the *2012 * *London Olympics Games *next month, and Davis seemed more than happy to hang up his apron to offer her some Aussie support.

"I'll be in the crowd, yelling and screaming," he laughed. "After Gem is done, we're going to do a tour around Europe. The plan is to travel through countries like Italy, Croatia and Spain and really soak up what they've got to offer."

On whether he would pursue his love of food when he returns home, Davis said: "It's difficult to work out what the next step is but I'm not in a rush right now."

MasterChef airs 7pm today on Ten.
