A Cannington storage shop is defying Perth's reputation for bad service, winning an award for outstanding customer service for the second year running.

Howards Storage World Cannington franchise owner Denise Thomas said she had become very aware of service at other businesses since she opened the store in 2008.

She believed customers were the priority but sometimes did not get that feeling in other shops.

"Although they may be there to facilitate a sale, if that's all they're employed to do that's not customer service, that's just putting a transaction through the till," she said.

"People do vote with their feet."

Ms Thomas said she was delighted her store won the consumer durables and household goods category of the Retail Traders' Association of WA Retail Awards for Customer Service Excellence on Saturday.

She credited the win to staff training, making sure customers were happy with the product they bought and "old-fashioned service" such as carrying items to cars.

"It's just not about putting a sale through," Ms Thomas said.

"It's everything else you do."

Other winners were Coles, Margaret River; Gabriella Frattini, Booragoon; Absolutely Beautiful, Noranda; and Woolworths worker Jordann Oliphant, 21.
