Wrong-way driver in freeway crash

A woman had to be cut free from her car after colliding head-on with a car travelling on the wrong side of the road on the Kwinana Freeway last night.

The incident happened in Como after Canning Highway at 9.20pm.

A police spokesman said officers from the Regional Operations Group were travelling north on the Kwinana Freeway when they saw a black Holden Commodore travelling in the wrong direction (north in the southbound lanes).

The Commodore then crashed head-on into a beige Holden Acclaim which was travelling south.

The 20-year-old driver and 19-year-old passenger of the Acclaim were taken to Royal Perth Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses told police the Commodore may have been travelling at 100km/h.

The 20-year-old female driver of the Acclaim was trapped in her car and had to be cut free by firefighters, police said.

She is understood to have suffered serious lower leg injuries, believed to be broken legs, and was taken to hospital. Her 19-year-old passenger was taken with hospital with minor injuries.

The 44-year-old driver of the black Commodore is currently assisting police with their inquiries. She was breath-tested and taken to hospital.

Police will investigate whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Southbound lanes on the freeway were closed to traffic as emergency services teams tackled the crash scene.
