Warnings after sharks detected

Beach users have been warned after sharks were detected off some of Perth's most popular beaches, including Cottesloe and Scarborough.

The Department of Fisheries yesterday warned water users between Port Kennedy and Ocean Reef of shark detections in the area.

The department said tagged sharks had been picked up by Shark Monitoring Network receivers at Cottesloe, North Cottesloe, Swanbourne and 1.5km off Scarborough and Ocean Reef.

A department spokesman said an abundance of baitfish in those areas was likely attracting sharks, both tagged and untagged.

"It is not uncommon for sharks to be present off the coast throughout the year," the department said.

"However, water users should be aware that, given the current environmental indications, the increase in reported shark activity in the Perth metro area may continue for several days."

Water users have been urged to adhere to beach closures and check for shark detections and sightings on the Surf Lifesaving WA Twitter account.
