Insurers warn of cost rise

Insurers have warned if bushfires continue to wreak havoc in the Perth Hills, they may have to review premiums in the area.

The Insurance Council of Australia said though the Parkerville-Stoneville bushfire itself was unlikely to lead to an increase, if a pattern emerged, premiums could rise.

"Insurers consider a wide range of factors when determining premiums and generally price to individual risk," an ICA spokeswoman said.

The ICA has so far put the cost of the weekend's bushfire at $15 million, with 350 claims received.

It said the extent to which premiums may rise was a commercial decision for individual companies.

Major home insurers SGIO and RAC said it was too early to know if the Parkerville fires would have an impact.
