Pilbara worker comes home to rubble

Sifting through what used to be his lounge room, Matt Davis picks up a small piece of wood from the rubble.

"That's what's left of my Fu Dog, from Vietnam, it's meant to bring good luck," he said, shaking his head.

"Looking at this room now you wouldn't realise I ever had anything in here."

The same can be said for most of the Stoneville house Mr Davis called home for 23 years. Aside from charred gym equipment, a TV lying face down in the rubble and smashed crockery which exploded out of the dishwasher as the fire came through, little else can be identified among the blackened mess.

Outside, underneath a collapsed garage roof, Mr Davis points out the shell of what was his "pride and joy" - a 1971 HQ Holden utility. It was not insured. "That's what I'm really jacked off about, my ute," the 46-year-old said. Mr Davis, a fly-in, fly-out electronics technician, was working in Karratha when the fire struck and was unable to salvage anything from his home.

His house-sitter and dog Zeek were evacuated when the fire hit, demolishing his home as well as two cars, a fishing boat and thousands of dollars in car parts.

"It's sinking in slowly but at the end of the day there's nothing you can do, you've got to accept it and hope the insurance companies do the right thing," he said.
