Nearly sold, then nothing to sell

The "under offer" sticker had barely settled outside Andrea Becker's home when the bushfire tore through Grenville Road on Sunday.

As if in defiance, the For Sale sign was one of the only things that remained standing yesterday when the mother of four returned to view the charred remains of her home.

The offer to buy was made on Saturday afternoon. The contract now void, Ms Becker's plans to move to Albany "to escape the heat of the Hills" are also in limbo.

"I'm staying with my son in Northam," she said.

"We're now looking at just taking what's left.

"Nothing survived. I didn't grab (photos). I didn't get time. They're all gone. You can see remnants of books, and if you touch them they fall to a powdery substance.

"Clothes, shoes, everything is gone. I need a bed, I need a change of clothes, I need a home. I have a place to stay but I don't have a home."

Ms Becker said the prospective buyer of her home now just had four weeks to find accommodation because they had sold their home in preparation of moving.

She described the relief at finding her three cats alive, especially the cat owned by her daughter Bonnie, who is climbing Mt Everest and unaware there had been a fire.
