Kinne pays the Price for laughs

With his eponymous sketch show about to start its second season, Troy Kinne has been nominated for the Graham Kennedy Award for most outstanding newcomer at this year’s Logie Awards.

It was the last thing the Melbourne- based comedian expected when he made his first video with Max Price, with whom he now writes, directs and edits the show.

After being introduced at a previous shoot, Kinne enlisted Price at short notice the next day for an idea he had while watching the 2012 Olympics.

The resulting video, entitled S... Never Said During the Olympics, quickly became a viral sensation.

“From that day, even though we didn’t know where it was going, we started attacking it like a full-time job,” Kinne says. “We would meet in the morning, discuss some ideas, then pick those we wanted to film and edit them that night.”

The pair have their differences; Kinne is 37 while Price is only 24 and they have tapped into their age gap for a sketch called Under 30/Over 30.

“He’s one of those people who can still go out and feel fine the next day whereas I need a good three or four days to recover after a night out,” Kinne laughs. “That sketch came about basically from the realisation that from the day you turn 30 everything becomes so much harder.”

The first season introduced us to characters such as the Impromptu Lifeguard and the Actual Bachelor, and the new season will have newbies such as Rough Street Magician portrayed by Oliver Clark.

“He’s a good magician, he just picks the wrong people to do tricks with,” Kinne says. “He gets his wallet stolen; picks a couple who are in the middle of a fight; he’s trying to do magic for people in the middle of a drug deal. It’s become one of my favourite bits.”

Currently in the US finishing off scripts with occasional co-star Josh Lawson, Kinne hopes to be back in Australia for the Logies next month. Being a nominee is still taking some getting used to for the comedian.

“I realised how weird it was when my mum and my dad, well mainly my mum, were so excited about it,” he recalls.

“They were huge fans of Paul Hogan, Graham Kennedy and Bert Newton, so to have my name floating out there with the Logie crowd is a weird feeling.”

Kinne airs on Thursday at 9.30pm on 7mate.
