  • My Big Fat Operation *

One must avoid the temptation to be judgmental here - after all, people are obese for all sorts of reasons, not all of them connected with eating too much. One's initial reaction, however, at the sight of these beleaguered souls is simple - wow. There are six episodes in this new series which follows the progress of 12 people as they go from morbidly obese to much smaller as a result of bariatric surgery. Tonight, we meet Matthew who, at 36, weighs 228kg. The surgery is all that is between him and an almost-certain premature death. This is a British program and we are told that obesity-related illness will cost health services in Britain $70 billion a year by 2050. It says something about us that a program on morbidly obese people is also morbidly fascinating.
