Breathing Fire: Secret Weapon of the Somme
SUNDAY, 4.30PM, HISTORY

What better documentary to watch on Remembrance Day even if it was first shown on the ABC exactly a year ago?

It so well illustrates the brutality and, in the end, futility of war.

Time Team's Tony Robinson enlists British Royal Engineers and historian Peter Barton and archaeologist Tony Pollard to investigate the Livens Flame Projector, used by the British on the first day of the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and only once after that in 1917.

Though the weapon may have saved some lives, spraying burning oil on enemy soldiers was a step too far.
