Zoe learns to be nice

Zoe Tuckwell-Smith admits it's not easy playing a nice girl. As the kind-hearted Bec O'Connor on WA-raised director Bevan Lee's popular Seven drama series, Winners & Losers, the actress said she struggled with her character constantly trying to help those who didn't want to be helped - namely high school bully Tiffany Turner (Michala Banas).

"It was frustrating because I don't think I would persist so strongly with someone who was so negative towards me," Tuckwell-Smith told AAA. "But I think that's where you have to put your own feelings aside and really just be true to what the scriptwriters and creators of the show want."

Bec's recent discovery that Tiffany, who has featured strongly in the show this season, is trapped in an abusive relationship leads her to offer the cold-hearted queen of mean a place to stay while she fights for custody of her two children.

But could her generosity be more trouble than it's worth?

"Bec is a very generous person with her love and concern, which even extends to her enemies and those who've been unkind to her," Tuckwell-Smith said.

"What transpires over the next few weeks is you see the wrestle between Bec wanting to do the right thing and Tiffany wanting to be helped.

"But then Tiffany also finds it hard to let herself be helped by someone she doesn't necessarily consider a true friend."

Despite her character being caught up in co-parenting dramas, Tuckwell-Smith has enjoyed playing a pregnant woman.

"It's great, it's been really fun to play," she said.

"Having never been pregnant, I had to do my homework. I worked very closely with a midwife, who is extremely experienced, and every week I would get updates like 'This is how far along you are and what the baby would be like... these are the emotions you're feeling', so that was definitely a journey of understanding what women go through."

But after last week's episode which saw Bec rushed to hospital and her unborn baby's life hanging by a thread, could fans expect to see more trouble down the track for the doting mother-to-be?

"I don't want to give too much away yet," Tuckwell-Smith said, with a light giggle. "But it's definitely been an interesting journey."

Winners & Losers airs Tuesdays at 8.30pm on Seven/GWN7.
