Brendan Cowell spent so much time in cricket whites earlier this year that he joked he should be known as a cricketer/actor.
"I've been a bit of a slashie during my career, writer/actor/director now I'm a cricketer/actor I guess, which is a new one," he laughed.
Cowell, right, has been portraying WA cricket legend Rod Marsh in Nine's blockbuster mini-series Howzat! Kerry Packer's War, which concludes this weekend.
He also wrote and starred in Save Your Legs!, which has its WA premiere on Saturday at Busselton's CinefestOZ, ahead of its release in January.
"Let's just say I was more suited to my role as a D-grade cricket captain than I was as the legendary Rod Marsh but I was happy to accept both roles," said Cowell, who played cricket from four into his 20s.
It was while filming Save Your Legs! in India that he heard about Howzat!
"That's when Damon Gameau, who I was shooting it with, was offered the role of Greg Chappell. He said to me 'If I am Greg Chappell, you have to be Rod Marsh, look at your head'," he said.
"So we ended up getting a photo of him and I at the SCG underneath the framed photo of Greg and Rod, and we emailed it to (producer) John Edwards and just let him know the likeness and somehow it came to fruition."
Cowell said he could take or leave acting these days but he was anxious to land the Howzat! role because of the calibre of actors involved.
"It's Lachy (Hulme) and Abe's (Forsythe) story really, John Cornell and Kerry Packer's tale, we are the chorus," he said.
"It's a behind- the-scenes political drama but they still managed to get some pretty fantastic actors to play the cricketers and that is what drew me in."
Howzat! Kerry Packer's War airs Sunday at 8.30pm on Nine/WIN.
