Bless This Mess
Mitchell is no more the ingenue who released Said One to the Other in 2007 than she is an Australian Idol contestant. She has shed the childlike whimsy of Coin Laundry and has, on the titular track and Walk with Me, developed a sense of the anthemic, a la Killers.
But where Spiritus, with its cascading keyboard line, is the best expression of her joytastic sound, the Mitchell-meets-Maharishi of The Present lacks subtlety.
Yes, cynics might baulk at The Story of the Raven and the Mushroom Man but the liner notes reveal a standard of lyricism behind this LP that demands respect. Lisa Mitchell has arrived.
