Banks

Matador/Remote Control

4 stars

Fear not, Interpol fans. Frontman Paul Banks has not ditched his clinical approach to songwriting for his first album under his own name.

But he sounds fresher than ever as tracks like the hypnotising Arise, Awake among the numerous songs that hint at a renewed optimism, alongside Young Again and Summertime is Coming.

Playing most of the instruments himself, Banks also brought in drummer Sebastian Thomson from post-rock champs Trans Am on the heaviest track on the record, Paid For That, while the film dialogue-sampling Another Chance could be the intro to a psychological thriller.

This record is proof that leaving one's comfort zone is good for creativity.
