The Bourne Legacy, the fourth film in the series based on the Robert Ludlum novels, has rocketed straight to the top of the Australian box office.

It took in $4.2 million over the weekend, more than double its nearest rival, the Australian production The Sapphires.

Even though superstar Matt Damon has bowed out of the Bourne series after starring in the previous three blockbusters, it doesn't seem to have hurt the franchise.

Jeremy Renner stars in the Bourne Legacy, which also features Ed Norton and Rachel Weisz.

Meanwhile, The Sapphires showed staying power to remain No. 2 in its second week of release, raking in almost $2 million, only slightly down from its opening.

Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises dropped from No. 1 to No. 3 in its fifth week of release.

The only newcomer to the top 10 was Bollywood production Ek Tha Tiger.

Despite lame reviews, the film grossed $320,518, even though it played on only 20 screens - a phenomenal average of $16,026 per screen.

The Bourne Legacy, by comparison, averaged $9655 per screen.
