Russell Crowe has reportedly signed on to make his feature film directorial debut.

The Australian actor has teamed up with old schoolmate Mark Staufer to make a biopic about the life of US comedian Bill Hicks.

Staufer, who will write the script, told reporters: "Bill Hicks' life was tragically short, but spectacularly interesting."

Hicks died of pancreatic cancer in 1994 at age 32. Production will start early next year.
