Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are getting a divorce.

The Rock of Ages star and his actress wife - who have been married for five years - have confirmed they have split, with Katie's attorney Jonathan Wolfe saying she wants to do what is best for their six-year-old daughter Suri.

He said: "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

Cruise, who has been married twice before to Nicole Kidman and Mimi Rogers, wed the former Dawson's Creek actress in an Italian castle in November 2006.

He is believed to currently be in Iceland filming new movie Oblivion while Katie is in New York.

Cruise recently gushed about his wife saying he loved her "creativity" and claiming their relationship was "very special".

He said: "She is an extraordinary person, and if you spent five minutes with her, you'd see it. Everything she does, she does with this beautiful creativity. She has a voice and warmth as an artist, as a mother. She's funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better.

"I'm a romantic. I like doing things like creating romantic dinners, and she enjoys that. I don't know what to say - I'm just happy, and I have been since the moment I met her. What we have is very special."

Holmes reportedly was scared she was turning "into a robot" while with Cruise.

She said she felt like she had changed "so much" in her time with Cruise and found their relationship had become "too much" for her.

A source said: "After five years of this Katie really felt like she was going crazy and that she was actually turning into the robot that the press had always made her out to be. Katie has actually got a great personality and she used to be spunky and feisty. She changed so much when she was with Tom, she became downtrodden and insipid.

"In the end it just got too much, she was sick of it and decided she had to do something. Basically, she grew up and lost the starstruck goggles she had been wearing."

Holmes is reportedly seeking full custody of their six-year-old daughter Suri, and began to question her life with Tom and how much he made decisions.

The source added to RadarOnline.com: "Katie did not want Tom making all the decisions in Suri's life, and that's what was going on. She decided it was high time she started deciding on what was best for her daughter, or at least having an equal say, and she knew that would be impossible if she remained Mrs. Tom Cruise."

Cruise has confirmed he is upset about the demise of his five year marriage but is focusing on his children Connor, 17 and Isabella, 19 from his relationship with Kidman and his six-year-old daughter Suri.

The actress - who has filed documents to divorce Tom Cruise based on "irreconcilable differences" - has asked for legal custody, primary residential custody and a "suitable amount" of child support from her husband, TMZ.com reports.

In addition she has asked for the division of their property, although no mention of their pre-nuptial agreement is mentioned in the documents.

Holmes' parents are reportedly sad she has split from Cruise but glad to have their daughter back.

Martin and Kathleen Holmesapparently didn't want their youngest child to marry the actor but are relieved they have parted ways after five years.

A source told website RadarOnline: "Obviously, Martin and Kathleen are sad that Katie is having to go through all this emotional turmoil and that she is going to be a single parent, but it's not like she is going to have to go it alone and she certainly won't have any financial hardship to worry about.

"Both Martin and Kathleen had very strong reservations about Katie marrying Tom, but she was an adult and they obviously couldn't stop her from following her heart. It's been tough for them over the past five years to watch Katie be controlled by Tom and they really felt that they had lost their daughter to some extent."

The grandparents' worry at the moment is the estranged couple's daughter.

The insider continued: "Their real concern right now though is Suri. She is still trying to understand exactly what is going on and she is obviously picking up on her mum's emotions at this time and playing up to a degree.

"Katie's mum and dad are providing as much love and support as they can to their daughter and their granddaughter and are trying to make it as easy a transition as possible."
