Lindsay Lohan has been cast alongside adult film star James Deen in famed writer Bret Easton Ellis's latest movie project.

The actress is taking on the lead role in the American Psycho author's upcoming thriller The Canyons, and she'll have an unconventional co-star in porn sensation Deen.

Ellis heaped praise on the Mean Girls star on Monday when he announced the casting to his Twitter followers.

In a series of posts, he wrote: "James Deen and Lindsay Lohan will star in The Canyons. And I am beyond thrilled that James Deen and Lindsay Lohan will be playing the parts of Christian and Tara in The Canyons... Could not have dreamed of a better cast. Lindsay nailed it..."

Ellis previously revealed that he had 26-year-old Deen in mind when he wrote his screenplay about "five twentysomethings' quest for power, love, sex and success in 2012 Hollywood".

Paul Schrader will direct the film, production on which will begin next month.

Lohan is still shooting her official comeback movie, the TV project Liz & Dick, in Los Angeles.
