Less than a year ago, Elizabeth Debicki was just another drama school graduate. But less than two weeks ago, the blonde beauty celebrated the end of principal filming for Baz Luhrmann's estimated $127 million adaptation of The Great Gatsby.
The 21-year-old Victorian was plucked from obscurity by the esteemed Aussie director to play the role of golfer Jordan Baker, the love interest of Tobey Maguire's Nick Carraway and best friend of Daisy Buchanan, played by Carey Mulligan.
"Some days I just can't believe this is happening," she told Access All Areas during a rare break from filming in Sydney.
Until Gatsby, the Victorian College of Arts graduate had only landed a small part in upcoming Aussie comedy A Few Best Men.
In May, Luhrmann announced she had been cast in his highly anticipated film alongside a number of huge stars including Leonardo DiCaprio after flying her to Los Angeles for auditions.
Already wary of her impeding fame and surprisingly guarded for a young actress, Debicki said she had enjoyed getting to know the mega-star cast but was careful not to spill too many details.
"We do some stuff together as a group sometimes," she said. "I probably spend more time with Carey really than anyone else. She's just the most beautiful girl, she's a lovely, lovely person and I feel so lucky that on my first job I got to work with such a lovely cast."
When AAA spoke with Debicki, she was to film a kissing scene with Maguire and appeared indifferent about the awkward encounter.
"I think it's best not to think about it too much," she said.
"Kissing in films, it's just another thing you have to do. It's kind of becomes as technical as how to open a door really."
When asked how she was preparing for the intimate scene with Maguire, who famously shared an upside-down kiss with Spiderman co-star Kirsten Dunst, she simply answered: "Brushing my teeth."
Debicki, who has been called a young Nicole Kidman, has also joined the ranks of Rose Byrne, Teresa Palmer and Rachael Taylor, becoming the new face of jeweller Jan Logan.
She took time out of her busy filming schedule to shoot the campaign last year.
Debicki spent time with family at home in Melbourne over Christmas and will head to Los Angeles soon.
