Ship Kings: The Voyage of The Unquiet Ice
REVIEW: JENNIFER PETERSON-WARD
Miles Franklin-winning author Andrew McGahan turned his attention to writing for young adults with his series Ship Kings, the first book of which - The Coming of the Whirlpool - was released last year to critical acclaim.
This second instalment continues the epic tale of Dow Amber, a woodcutter's son destined to become the greatest mariner of his time.
Having spent the previous novel, quite literally, learning the ropes, we now find Dow embarking on a desperate voyage to the frozen north.
McGahan knows all the right buttons to press to excite a young reader - exotic locations, villains and lashings of peril - and delivers an addictive adventure tale which is sparklingly written and full of excitement.
