Redmayne blames Blanchett for his reaction

Eddie Redmayne says he was star struck and sent into a nervous frenzy when Cate Blanchett handed him his best actor award.

The Theory of Everything star said he found it difficult to make a speech after accepting the award from the Aussie legend.

"I mean, the fact that it was Cate Blanchett giving it," he told reporters backstage.

"And so I was recovering from that excitement of seeing her, and then just trying to bury all this frenzy of nerves and white noise and trying to speak articulately."

The widely applauded British actor seems to love Australian actors.

Backstage he called Alan Fletcher and Jackie Woodburne, who play Karl and Susan Kennedy on Neighbours, "the greatest unsung acting duo in history" and revealed he picked up many acting tips by watching them onscreen.

The Oscars is not the first time Redmayne has paid tribute to Aussie talent.

Last month, he said he was grateful to Toni Collette, who helped him on his first movie set.

"She (Collette) was like, 'No,no, no. Watch playback'," he said in an interview for GQ.

"And thank God - because my eyebrows were doing this crazy thing and my face was performing to the back of the stalls.

"I have a lot to thank Toni for."
