US TV host Ellen DeGeneres is developing a sitcom featuring a lesbian lead.

DeGeneres made headlines in 1997, when she came out to TV titan Oprah Winfrey on The Oprah Winfrey Show, just before her character on the sitcom Ellen revealed she was gay to her psychologist, played by Winfrey.

The Oscars host is now working with openly gay comedy writer Liz Feldman to executive produce a series about a lesbian who falls pregnant with her straight male best friend's baby.

Oprah Winfrey recently spoke about the backlash she received from TV viewers after playing the psychoogist role on the sitcom in 1997.

Discussing the incident on a special episode of her TV show Oprah's Next Chapter, which recently aired in America, the African-American TV host revealed, "I played the therapist on that show... and got the most and worst hate mail of my entire career after doing it, like 'Go back to Africa' hate mail."
