Dame Edna entertains Perth crowd

Dame Edna Everage certainly knows how to light up a room.

And given she's spent the past few decades entertaining crowds amid the bright lights of the showbiz stage, it's no surprise she knows how to work a crowd of bustling media folk.

While in Perth today ahead of her final show to mark the end of her days touring Australia for stage shows – which will wrap up in Perth next month – the legendary Dame Edna was quick to put wide-eyed reporters back in their place.

Arriving to a room full of star-struck media and giving her signature "Hello Possums" greeting, the legendary Dame Edna didn't hold back on her quick wit and humour.

"How have you found Perth?" one TV reporter asked, to which she quipped with a smile: "Well I got on a plane and flew here."

As one of Australia's greatest entertainers, the vivacious Dame Edna isn't about to go quietly into the night.

Rather, she will make sure each and every member of the audience is "empowered" by her last stage appearance.

"When I stand on that stage soon and look down at all my possums looking up at me, my little quokkas I call them, I think, 'Can I live without seeing their faces? Can I ever really be happy not doing what I'm doing now?'

"It's because I love my job that I've been doing it for so long," she said.

"And I will continue to work, but not at the rate I've been doing it. I can't. It's the touring you see that is very tiring."Speaking of Perth, Dame Edna had nothing but positive words for the city of the West Coast. "There's nothing really that I don't like about Perth at all. I've been racking my brain, but I love it, I really do," she smiled. Dame Edna will perform in her final stage show in Perth as part of Barry Humphries' Eat Pray Laugh farewell tour on February 1 at Crown Theatre. Tickets are available through Ticketek.
