UPDATE, 1.45pm: There will be no eviction on Big Brother this Sunday due to the premature exit of contestant Josh Moore on Wednesday night.

The South Australian musician has quit Big Brother after the sudden death of his brother, Toby, who is believed to have died from a heart attack.

A Nine spokeswoman said Moore was told of the death on Wednesday night and was taken out of the house to be with his parents Carolyn and Terry.

He was one of the favourites to win Big Brother and had never been put up for eviction during his two months in the Gold Coast compound.

"Last night in the Big Brother house, housemate Josh was called to the Captain's Quarters as the housemates were getting ready for bed," a statement from Nine said.

"Josh was taken out of the house to meet his parents who had to tell him the tragic news of the sudden death of his brother Toby, 32.

"Josh then spent the night outside the house with his family where he made the decision to leave the Big Brother competition and go home to support his family at this sad time.

The Southern Star production team and the Nine Network wish to express their sympathy to the family and ask the fans of Big Brother and the media to allow them privacy at this time."

In a Big Brother first, filming from the compound has been temporarily paused today to give Moore time to say goodbye to the housemates in private and allow the remaining contestants time to process the news.

The weekly task has also been cancelled and live updates today from the compound from social media have also been paused out of respect.

Tonight's episode was filmed prior to Moore's exit. Instead of an eviction, Sunday night’s Big Brother will celebrate Moore's time in the house.

Nine announced today that funds raised from this week's voting will be donated to The Salvation Army, a charity nominated by Moore and his family.
