Ruffo to play Mainy match

Former Balcatta concreter turned pop star Johnny Ruffo can't get enough of WA.

The 2011 X Factor finalist looks set to head west again next month to take part in the Chris Mainwaring Legends Match for Telethon on October 6 at Patersons Stadium.

But as AAA discovered during a chat with Ruffo last week, it's not the first time the 24-year-old has played in the charity game.

"I won a competition a few years back and actually played in the match, so it's the second time I've played," he said. "But hopefully this time I'll get a better run."

As an avid AFL fan, Ruffo said he was itching to get into his footy boots and had even been in training to get his fitness up to scratch.

"I've played football for 16 years so to be able to pull the boots back on and go for a run will be a lot of fun," he said. "I've been jumping in the gym two to three times a week, I've been doing a bit of running and a bit of weight work, so hopefully I don't get injured."

However, he also admits that the last time he kicked a football was more than two years ago.

"I might have to have a kick of the footy, otherwise I might be shanking them everywhere," he said. "But it's a great opportunity and it's all for a good cause, so hopefully I can get out there and kick a few goals."

While juggling his music career - his second single will be released soon - with his new social media role on Seven's The X Factor is bound to keep Ruffo busy over the coming months, he also hopes to return to WA for some downtime. "When I do get some time off I'm going to try to get back to Perth for a little bit longer than just a day or two," he said.

Other celebrities involved in the match include Packed to the Rafters star George Houvardas along with sports presenter Basil Zempilas and former West Coast Eagles great David Wirrpanda, who will be in the commentary box.

Tickets to the charity game are available through Ticketmaster.
