Perth songbird Samantha Jade's shot at fame is still within reach after Gold Coast lifeguard Adil Memon was sent packing from the X Factor last night.
As the first act to be eliminated from the top 12, an emotional Memon burst into tears on hearing he was out of the competition.
Along with Jade, right, the bubbly teen had failed to secure enough votes and landed in the bottom two.
Memon's mentor Mel B was stunned the 18-year-old had fallen short on viewer votes. "I’m shocked... I don't think this competition should lose Adil," she said.
Guy Sebastian was also dumbfounded Jade ended up in the bottom two after a stellar performance on Monday night.
"Vocally, she has to be one of the best in the competition," Sebastian said.
Angry viewers took to Twitter as the show aired to express their disappointment.
"If Samantha goes home I'm going to scream. She's so talented!" one wrote, while another tweeted: "What is up with Australia? You just voted two of this year's best contestants into the bottom 2."
Going head-to-head in a last-chance performance for the judges, a nervous-looking Memon took on Bruno Mars' hit, Just The Way You Are, while Jade showed off her wide-ranging vocals with Mariah Carey's classic hit, Without You.
But Sebastian, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Ronan Keating sided with Jade, eliminating Memon.
The remaining 11 acts will perform next week when the X Factor live shows continue.
