Striking a new chord

Budding actor Luke Arnold's upcoming stint on Winners & Losers might have sent him in a completely different career direction. The Adelaide-born, WAAPA-trained lad debuts as musician Lachie - Jenny Gross' (Melissa Bergland) new university friend - on tonight's episode of the Seven comedy drama.

Until his audition for the part, Arnold hadn't considered a musical career. However, since recording six episodes on the show's second season, he's thinking about making a career change.

"I never thought of myself as much of a singer but the audition came along and you had to go in and do the part and do a song," he tells AAA.

"I had so much fun preparing for this role and getting to play the part, I just didn't want to stop playing music."

Arnold is now lead singer of Motaboat and the band is set to record its first EP at the end of the month.

"They're both tough industries so I'll keep flogging away at both of them and see which one comes up best," he says.

Arnold says his role on the show will shake things up for the lead characters, who at the end of last season seemed to have everything on track.

"Without giving too much away, what's happening to a lot of the characters on the show this season is that they kind of got what they wanted at the end of season one and things are coming into their lives to make them question whether what they thought they wanted is really what they want," he says.

Since being accepted into WAAPA at 19, Arnold has appeared on McLeod's Daughters, Rush, Rescue: Special Ops, City Homicide and Steven Spielberg's The Pacific.

His first feature film role was in Broken Hill, where he had the opportunity to work with Academy Award-winner Timothy Hutton, Spy Kids star Alexa Vega, and fellow Aussie Rhys Wakefield.

Winners & Losers airs today at 8.30pm on Seven/GWN7.
