Baby girl for Marais

Perth actress Jessica Marais is celebrating the birth of first child with fiance James Stewart, Scout Edie Stewart.

The 27-year-old former Packed to the Rafters star gave birth to the baby girl in Sydney yesterday at 5.41pm.

"It is with much joy and pride that Jessica Marais and James Stewart announce the birth of their baby girl, Scout Edie Stewart," a statement from Marais' management said.

The couple, who met while playing on screen lovers on Rafters, are set to return to the US early next month, where Stewart will be the baby's primary carer while Marais goes back to work on the second series of drama Magic City, which has just been renewed for a second series.

Stewart confirmed to TV Week he was looking forward to his role of stay at home dad after recently announcing he would be leaving Rafters.

"Someone told me: 'you don't organise your life around the baby, the baby organises its life around you'. We're doing that," he said.

"It's Jess' turn to work and I'm going to do the primary care thing and keep the house going."

Scout is the first child for couple, who became engaged in October and announced their pregnancy in November but are yet to announce a wedding date.

Previously, Marais has admitted that the pregnancy was a shock which derailed her plans to launch a Hollywood career.

"When we found out, that was an issue," the former St Hilda's student said. "But I found that just about every other actress who has had a child and works tells you it can be done and that there is never the perfect time.

"So we are embracing what we have and looking towards the future with bright eyes."
