Sir Elton John helped raise more than $US5 million ($A4.85 million) for charity at a New York fundraiser with pal Elizabeth Hurley.

Hurley attended the Big Apple ball in aid of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) with her fiance Shane Warne.

She stepped onstage at the annual Hot Pink Party to surprise Sir Elton with a bouquet of pink flowers after his set.

And the actress later took to Twitter to pay tribute to late Estee Lauder boss Evelyn Lauder, who founded the BCRF.

"In NY for the big Breast Cancer Research Foundation fundraiser tonight," she tweeted.

"Will very much miss my friend Evelyn. Massive thanks to everyone there tonight. Elton played so beautifully and we raised over 5 million dollars."
