Buck to leave Triple J
Buck to leave Triple J

Veteran radio presenter Robbie Buck admits there will be tears when he switches his microphone off for the last time on Triple j in December.

The much loved co-host of Breakfast on Triple j with Marieke and The Doctor has decided to leave the national youth station before he became "an irrelevant has been".

"I wanted to pull out before I became a disgrace," Buck said.

"For over 12 years, a third of my life, I've been at this station.

"I have spoken to so many people over the years, its incredible … it really defies putting my finger on (the most memorable interviewees) really."

However, some memorable guests include Toni Collette and Cate Blanchett and an interview with Ben Harper that went awry.

Another unforgettable moment was when he played the wrong Led Zeppelin song during a Hottest 100 songs of all time broadcast.

It's his listeners and his colleagues he'll miss the most, he says.

"Getting up in the morning and looking forward to seeing your co-workers at 5am, that's pretty special," Buck said.

However, Buck is not leaving the radio industry nor the ABC for that matter, instead he is moving on to start a new gig as host of Evenings on 702 ABC Sydney, 666 ABC Canberra and ABC Local Radio NSW.

Buck was originally spotted by Triple j at the Australian Film and Television Radio School and since then has become a much loved part of the Triple j family.

He has been part of the Triple j breakfast team since January 2008, and has hosted Weekday Lunch and Drive (Top Shelf), Weekend Breakfast and was creator and host of the Australian music show Home and Hosed.

ABC radio director Kate Dundas said Buck is one of the smartest, funniest and nicest people in broadcasting today.

"Triple j audiences love him for his music knowledge and bands respect him for his commitment to the Australian music industry," she said.

"ABC Radio is proud to be able to keep someone of Robbie's talent in the organisation for our ABC local radio audiences to enjoy."
