U2 show pride for Irish gay marriage

U2 marked history in their native Ireland by dedicating their recent US performance of Pride (In The Name of Love) to those who voted in favour of gay marriage.

During the band’s gig in Phoenix, Arizona, Bono slightly altered the lyrics of the song to reference the Irish referendum on same-sex marriage.

The singer, right, told the audience: “We have peace in Ireland today. And in fact on this very day we have true equality in Ireland.”

In what was a huge turn-out, more than 60 per cent of Irish voters agreed that gay marriage should be legal. The result has sent shock waves through the world, with stars like Miley Cyrus and Sam Smith celebrating the historic victory for gay rights.

U2 kicked off their new world tour in Vancouver, Canada, on May 14. The first gig was a painful one for guitarist The Edge after he fell offstage while performing I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For during an encore.
