Clinton backs Arquette's Oscars pay plea

Patricia Arquette's equal pay speech has won the backing of US politician Hillary Clinton.

The former US Secretary of State and First Lady has thrown her support behind Arquette after she spoke out about the issue at the Academy Awards on Sunday, when she picked up the Best Supporting Actress trophy for her role in Boyhood.

"To every woman who gave birth, to every tax payer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else's equal rights, it's our time to have wage equality once and for all, and equal rights for women in the United States of America," Arquette told the audience.

Clinton, who is rumoured to be a future presidential candidate, endorsed Arquette's message during a speech at a technology conference in California on Tuesday.

"Many women are paid less for the same work, which is why I think we all cheered at Patricia Arquette's speech at the Oscars because she's right - it's time to have wage equality once and for all."
