Hanks' son has substance abuse problem

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have been nursing a secret heartache at home as their son Chester has spent years battling substance abuse.

The Hollywood couple's 24-year-old son, who goes by the nickname Chet, has opened up about his struggle with drink and drugs, revealing he is finally getting help after years of substance abuse.

He made the announcement in a video posted on his Instagram.com page, admitting he has been in rehab and was celebrating 50 days clean at the time he made the recording.

"I've been struggling with substance abuse since I was 16 years old. Finally at the age of 24 I decided to get some help," he writes in a caption posted alongside the video.

"With 50 days of sobriety under my belt, I can honestly say I'm the happiest I've ever been. I'm thankful for my family and everybody that cares about me, including my fans.

"I've been blessed with the programs of AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) and NA (Narcotics Anonymous) which allow me to rise above this disease. I'm learning to accept my faults and be OK with being human."

Chester is an aspiring rapper and goes under the name Chet Haze.
