Crowdfund plan to bring Paul Weller to Perth

Two passionate music promoters are hoping to use crowdfunding to overcome WA's isolation and bring influential British rocker Paul Weller to Perth.

Chris Ferry and Joey Waller have set up a Kickstarter project to raise funds and interest for a possible gig by the former Jam frontman in 2015.

Waller said many international acts touring Australia either bypassed Perth or were bundled into a one-size-fits-all festival.

"I think it is more to do with the geographical isolation of Perth as a city more than anything but it can sometimes be a frustration to music fans in Perth," he said.

"We thought that by producing a gig through crowdfunding it would help to show the rest of the world that there is a big demand for quality music gigs in Perth."

"A crowdfunded gig shows that the fan base is ready and waiting before the artist is even booked."

The pair are hoping to raise $150,000 by December 1 before they approach Weller's management company.

People can donate between $20 and $600 with each pledge above $100 guaranteeing a ticket to the gig.

Waller said he believed this type of promotion would become more common in the music industry and cited the recent popularity of crowdfunded gigs for American band Foo Fighters.

Fans crowdfunded a Foo Fighters gig in Richmond, Virgina earlier this year.

Fans ran a successful online campaign to bring the band to Richmond, Virginia earlier this year.

Another Kickstarter campaign to bring Foo Fighters to Birmingham in the UK raised £150,000 in seven days.

"What the Foo Fighters gig in Virginia and hopefully our Paul Weller gig in Perth are showing is that it is possible for regular music fans to get involved with the music," Waller said.

"It brings the power back to real music fans. If they really want a certain artist to perform in their city they now have the ability to make it happen.

"No longer do they have to rely on large commercial event companies to hopefully decide that they would like to promote the artist, instead the fans can get out there and make it happen themselves."
