As rumours of cheating continue to swirl around *Gwyneth Paltrow *and *Chris Martin *, a source has claimed the now- separated couple had an "open" relationship.

Though they have pulled together after announcing their split last week and took their children on an island getaway to escape the media circus, an insider told People the celebrity duo, right, had been "on and off" for some time and Paltrow "didn't care" if her Coldplay rocker husband was seen with another woman.

"They were physically separated and emotionally," the source said of the pair. "They always have been comfortable doing things apart. No one thought that was unusual."

Before their split, Martin was linked to beauties such as *Kate Bosworth *and *Helena Christensen *, while Paltrow's rumoured affairs were said to have included *Elle Macpherson *'s billionaire husband, *Jeffrey Soffer *.

The source said Paltrow, 41, was neither "jealous" nor "territorial".

"If Chris was playing around, Gwyneth didn't care," they said.

The insider also accused the actress of being narcissistic and "anxious about ageing", which they said contributed to the marriage breakdown.

But despite the controversy surrounding their personal lives, the source added Paltrow and Martin were still parents first to *Apple *, 9, and * Moses *, 8.

"They seemed to have a pretty mature handle on that crazy rotation of being superstars and parents," the insider said.
