Minchin rewrites Groundhog Day

Tim Minchin hopes to follow up his West End and Broadway hit Matilda with a musical adaptation of the cult comedy film Groundhog Day.

Minchin is working with Danny Rubin, who wrote the script for the 1993 film, and Matilda director Matthew Warchus on the show.

The Perth-born composer and performer said on his website the musical would be released within two years.

The film's story of a weatherman, played in the film by Bill Murray, forced to relive the same day over again until he rediscovers his positive outlook on life, was perfectly suited for the stage.

"Our version of Groundhog Day is going to be both instantly recognisable and utterly different," Minchin said.

Matilda the Musical, with music and lyrics by Minchin, won a record seven Olivier Awards, and is currently running in New York and London. It will open in Melbourne next year.
