Matthew Perry is returning to TV for a revamp of movie-to-TV series The Odd Couple.

The actor, who has starred in a series of flops following his days on Friends, is hoping his new role as grumpy Oscar Madison will be a hit.

The Odd Couple started out as a Neil Simon play about two divorced men who decided to share an apartment despite their clashing personal habits and personalities.

It became a cult 1968 film starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon, then took off as a TV comedy in the early 1970s, with Jack Klugman and Tony Randall in the lead roles.

It's not known who will play Madison's sidekick, the compulsively neat Felix Unger, in the new series.
