A petition has begun to have a laneway in the City of Melbourne named after Divinyls singer Chrissy Amphlett, who died of breast cancer recently.

The petition at is supported by Chrissy's husband Charley Drayton.

"Chrissy Amphlett loved Melbourne and it would be wonderful for her family, friends and admirers all over the world to have a special space dedicated to her in this famously musical city. Amphlett was born in Geelong but it is not known why her hometown was not chosen as a better location for the laneway.

Despite being from Victoria, her band the Divinyls was formed in Sydney in 1980. She died in New York on April 22 at the age of 53.

Melbourne has an AC/DC Lane in the city and Paul Hester Walk in the suburb of Elwood.
